The Y.A.M.S. Constitution

Yoga Club Constitution
September 2008

  1. Purpose
    1. Yoga is a Sanskrit word, derived from the root ‘yuj’, which translates directly to ‘union’.  Paralleling its linguistic origins, the purpose of yoga practice is to engage in movement meditation that promotes purification and union between body, mind, and spirit.  Yoga is a powerful and dynamic healing exercise that focuses equally on balance, strength, and flexibility.  Students progress naturally through rhythmically linked postures united with breath, bringing forth a heightened awareness.  Through this awareness, yoga practice may have a dramatic impact on physical and mental health; stilling the mind while simultaneously recruiting voluntary and involuntary muscle groups.  Thus, there is potential for both physiological (e.g. ↑immune functioning, ↑circulation) and psychological (e.g. ↓stress, ↑concentration) benefits from yoga practice.
