The tentative schedule for the spring semester has been posted. The Messiah Open is a tentative event, as we may or may not get into the tournament. The Tri Meet with PSU Altoona and Montclaire State is still tentative based on the date, it will either take place on the scheduled date or will replace the Messiah Open based on the availability of both teams.
Practices for Fall 2012
Practices will begin on Monday, September 17th and will be held every Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 in the IM wrestling room.
Beginning of Tuesday Practices
Tuesday practices will begin again in the Rec Hall wrestling room, starting at 6:30 weekly.
First Interest Meeting
The first interest meeting of the year will be held on friday, September 2nd in the IM building wrestling room at 5PM.
2011 NCWA National Championship
The Penn State Club Wrestling Team finished their competition schedule with a trip to Macon, Georgia during Spring Break for the NCWA Individual National Championship Tournament. Those who made the trip were Senior Jason Turpyn (133), Freshman Sean Irvine (141), and Coach Frank Rainey of the Frank Rainey Duals.
The season ended after the first day for Sean Irvine going 0-2. The Freshman will be back again next season to hopefully move further. Senior Jason Turpyn ended his season on the second day of the tournament, going 1-2. The returns to State College without any hardware, but finished up a successful season as a team overall.
2011 NCWA MEC Championships
This past weekend the Penn State Club Team competed in the 2011 MEC Championships. Senior Jason Turpyn (133), sophomore Sean Irvine (141), and Graduate Tyler Malys (235) all took 3rd place at the tournament, earning an automatic spot in the NCWA National Championships. Brandon Munoz (149) and Brazillian Mitchell also competed in the tournament but did not place.
The qualifying wrestlers will be traveling to Macon, GA during spring break to compete in the NCWA National Championships. You can follow the action live at www.ncwa.net during the tournament.
Doug Cherry Invitational Tournament
Penn State ventured to Lafayette College this past weekend to compete in the Doug Cherry Invitational Tournament. Four wrestlers finished the day with medals. Jason Turpyn (133), Luke Fedechko (141), and Frank Labrusciano (157) finished 1st in each of their respective weight classes, and Sean Irvine (141) took 2nd right behind his teammate in the finals. Kevin Eberly and Garrick Stafford went 1-2 at the event, and Billy Loftus finished the day 2-2, losing both his matches to the same wrestler.
As a team, Penn State finished third behind UMBC (1st) and Williamson (2nd). Next weekend, the Penn State squad will travel to Williamson to compete in the PA States individual tournament on Saturday, and UMBC on Sunday to wrestle in a tri-meet against UMBC and Johns Hopkins.
First Home Dual vs. University of Delaware
The club hosted their first ever home dual meet in the IM Building this past Saturday 1/29. The Penn State team won the Dual 36-18 after receiving a number of forfeits during the match. Sophomore Frank Labrusciano won a close match when he pinned his opponent in the 3rd at a time of 6:04. Junior Garrick Stafford also recorded a pin in the 3rd period with a time of 5:45.
The club will be traveling to Lafayette next weekend to compete in the Doug Cherry Invitational Tournament.
Builder Invitational at the Apprentice School
The Penn State Club Wrestling team traveled south to The Apprentice School for their first competition of the season. Penn State brought 6 wrestlers to the Builder Duals. After the conclusion of the day, Frank Labrusciano was the only wrestler to medal at the tournament, losing to Virginia Tech in the Finals to finish 2nd at 165. Jason Turpyn (133) and William Loftus (157) both ended the tournament forfeiting their consolation final matches. Kevin Eberly (149) finished the day 2-2, while Brandon Munoz (149) and Sean Irvine (141) finished 1-2.
The Penn State Club will be competing in their first ever home dual meet against University of Delaware this weekend, Saturday January 29th at 2pm.
2010-2011 Season Approaching
Welcome back fellow wrestlers. The first meeting of the 2010-2011 season is set for next Wednesday, September 8th. The meeting will be held at 5:30 in the IM building wrestling room. A tentative schedule will be available and we will be collecting Participation Agreement forms then as well. Please fill it out and bring to this meeting. The first practice is tentatively scheduled for Monday, September 13th in the IM building. NCWA National Championships
The Penn State Club Wrestling Team finished the 2010 season as they entered into the National Championship tournament with 3 wrestlers, Jason Turpyn and Robbie Volrath at 133 and Wade McCorkel at 141. Robbie Volrath and Wade McCorkel made it to the third day of the tournament which guaranteed them to place in the top 8. Jason Turpyn lost in the second day ending the tournament with a record of 1-2.
The third day brought tough competition for both of the Penn State wrestlers who wrestled in the All-American rounds. Robbie Volrath defeated All-American Adam Bastow of Grand Valley State 3-2 in 5th place medal match to receive the 5th place medal. Wade McCorkel lost a tough fought match against Nate Hall of Grand Valley State 9-6 in the 7th place match to receive an 8th place medal. Wade is now a 2 time All-American with the NCWA now.
The team finished higher then they did in their previous year's final team score as Wade boosted the team score with extra team points in a number of his matches. The team finished in 10th place in their respective division. The team is looking to have an even stronger competition team next season and is already looking ahead to the 2010-2011 season.
