About Waste Not
Waste Not is an official Penn State student group devoted to the reduction of waste, especially food waste, and the betterment of lives throughout the State College area and beyond through voluntary community involvement and self-motivated civic engagement. Waste Not primarily concerns itself with acquiring perishable, leftover food from dining halls on University Park campus and delivering it to care homes, hospices, and halfway houses in the State College area. We also concern ourselves with other community service endeavors, such as working with residents at local youth shelters, volunteering at the State College Area Food Bank, and any activities directly impacting State College and Centre County as a whole.
One of Waste Not's central principles poses the question that, while composting excess food is a fine activity from a sustainability standpoint, why is the food allowed to reach this stage while still perfectly healthy to consume? Instead of being composted, it could be put to a more direct use in its current form. If you would like more information as to why this problem deserves a group devoted to it specifically (there are actually many groups that enact this same concept, on various scales), read some of the pages under the "Stuff You Should Read" section.
Participating in Waste Not donations is an easy, rewarding activity; each volunteer does one donation run per week (more if desired), and each run takes around 1 hour or less. The donation runs take place between 7-9PM, depending on the dining hall providing the donation.
Waste Not will meet every other Tuesday (3-29, 4-12) at 6PM in 110 Thomas.
