1998-99 UUS Meeting Topics
Unless otherwise noted, all meetings are on Tuesday evenings at 5:45 - 7:00 PM in the Memorial Lounge of Eisenhower Chapel.
September 29th: Discussion on the Philosophy of Religion
October 6th: Jason McFarland will lead a discussion.
October 13th: Jesse Durst will lead a discussion about the Society of Friends (Quakers).
October 20th: David Denkenberger will lead a discussion on whether we really all are created equal and if it would be fairer if different people were treated differently.
October 27th: Jason Whittle will lead a discussion.
November 3th: Jason Cornwell will lead a discussion.
November 10th: Paul Moses will lead a discussion on Buddhism.
November 17th: Several Baha'i students will discuss their faith.
November 24th: Going out to dinner.
December 1st: Discussion on one facet of Buddhism.
December 8th: Jesse Durst will lead a discussion on the relationship of modern science with spirituality.
December 15th: Regular meeting time and place, but we'll be going out to dinner.
Spring 1999 UUS Meeting Topics
January 12th: Introductions and an overview of Unitarian Universalism.
January 19th: More exploration of Unitarian Universalism. (Actually we got into a fairly heated debate about evolution, creation, science, etc.)
January 26th: Paul Moses is going to bring in some readings for us to discuss. Remember, we'll be making coffee this Sunday at the fellowship. It should be a lot of fun. If you need a ride, just let Brian Dempsey know when he emails you.
February 2nd: Jesse Durst and Jason McFarland will lead a discussion concerning the nature and function of human institutions such as religion, science, technology, government, etc.
February 9th: Jesse Durst and Jason McFarland will lead a discussion concerning the nature and function of human institutions such as religion, science, technology, government, etc.
February 16th: The local UU minister will tell us about his experiences and have an open forum for discussion.
February 23th: It keeps going ... and going ... and going ... No it's not the Energizer Bunny, but the discussion about human institutions. It seems that we complete one question every meeting. Well, we're going to continue with that again, as it seems to be a good topic.
March 16th: An analysis of the driving forces for UUs.
March 23rd: Dr. Douglass Anderson, a Professor of Philosophy at Penn State, will give a presentation. Dr Anderson specializes in areas such as American philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, history of philosophy.
March 30th: Dr. David Stickell, a retired research associate for Penn State, will talk about the concept of "self worth."
April 6th: We will be breaking up into pairs to discuss a diverse list of questions, and then discuss them as a group.
April 13th: Guests from Student Pugwash will be visiting to discuss environmental and ethical issues concerning science and technology.
April 20th: Kent Matthies will be visiting Penn State from Washington, DC. Our schedule is as follows:
April 27th: David Stickell will be back to continue the previous discussion on self worth.
May 4th: Food! For those attending the meeting, we'll go out to eat somewhere.
