Today, the team is fifteen members strong and hopes to continue to grow and gain more members in the future. The Nittany Lions are a student run team who work very hard to get routines ready for competitions for the spring.
Practices begin late October and are held at the Penn State McCoy Natatorium. The girls begin practice at 9 p.m. for an hour land-drill and later have practice in the pool from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. or 11:30 p.m. The team consists of various athletic abilities. Some girls join the team brand new to synchro and others join with some experience in the sport. For the most part, the team is made-up of beginners.
There are five girls on the A-Team, all of which have had some experience in synchronized swimming prior to joining the Nittany Lions. They meet every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. This year they are swimming to music from the Incredibles for their team routine. There are ten girls on the B-Team, most of which are experiencing synchro for the very first time. They practice every Monday and Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. under the instruction of Kate Farley, and coached by Lesley Holmer. They are swimming a team routine (of eight people) and a trio routine, both swimming to music from Mama Mia the movie. |
