9.20.11 General Meeting Minutes (Patty Van Kleef, Abercrombie & Fitch)

Welcome new SHRM members!  We had our first meeting of the semester on Tuesday and here is what we covered:

-The members were asked to join a committee they are interested in, such as mock interviewing, social events, and THON. If you missed the first meeting, you still have a chance to join. Email VP Dana McCarren (drm293@psu.edu).

-Dues $5/Semester or $10/Year - Please bring your dues to the next meeting or contact Treasurer Gail Goochee (gcg5029@psu.edu).

-Upcoming events you can get involved in: Etiquette Dinner (October 17 or November 14); Mock Interviewing Event (Date TBD); SHRM Internship Profiles Event (Date TBD); Social Events (TBD by Chelsey and Committees and dates to come); Resume Review (Date TBD).

-Guest speaker: Patty Van Kleef, recruiter from Abercrombie & Fitch discussed the company as well the Management In Training position currently available within the company.

10/4/11 : General Meeting Minutes


Director of HR at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Nik Shah, was the guest speaker who spoke about creating your personal brand. His powerpoint presentation is attached for your reference.

Hayride - Will be held on October 19th. Cost is $16. Please contact Sam Krone (sak5350@psu.edu) for details.

Etiquette Dinner - Will be held November 14th (Contact Alissa Hazi, ach5131@psu.edu). Details on the cost will be communicated soon. 30 available slots. Dues paying members have first priority. Otherwise, first come first serve basis.

Business Round Table - Contact Sam Krone (sak5350@psu.edu) with ideas on how SHRM can get involved with the community. 

Thon Update - The first canning weekend raised $200. Participation is highly encouraged for future canning events. Contact Andrea Chung (aic5056@psu.edu) for more details.

-Mock Interviewing and Resume Book: The next mock interviewing training session will be held during the spring semester. the last opportunity to submit your resume to be included in the SHRM resume book. The deadline will be Friday, November 18th.  (Contact Ethan Pitts emp5149@psu.edu)

SHRM Regional Case Competition

This is an inter-school competition to solve a business case study with HR solutions.

March 9-10, 2012 at University of Massachusetts.

Transportation, food and lodging are free, courtesy HRACC.

James M. Elliott Scholarship

Scholarship for the amount of $500 sponsored by HRACC.

            SHRM needs a new Relay for Life Officer!

Excellent way to gain access to up-to-date HR info and materials to prepare for tests such as the PHR.

Our topic for this week’s meeting was  Networking: What it Means After You Land the Job or Internship. It featured insights from our speakers Julie Hartley, CATABUS, HR Manager, (Also President of the Human Resource Association of Centre County), Stephanie Arney, Philips, Director of HR and Alex Seltzer, Priority Management Systems, Regional Director.

This is an opportunity to learn about life as a Human Capital Consultant, projects, and tips/tricks about interviewing.

SHRM Regional Case Competition

Gail Goochee participated in this competition that was held over two days at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

50 students from over a dozen schools participated.

It was an excellent networking opportunity.
