Opportunities for Graduate Students in Natural Resources Extension

Graduate students have opportunities to do many things during their program in the School of Forest Resources (SFR). One opportunity worth checking into is assisting with or participating in a Cooperative Extension Program. Extension Programs address the education needs of numerous audiences such as woodland owners, youth, natural resources professionals, hunters, wildlife watchers, and forest industries. Your involvement in an extension program could be one day or a several days over a year's time. Your level of involvement is up to you and the Extension specialist you choose to contact. To explore these opportunities, contact one of SFR’s "Extension Faculty" and let them know you of your interest. Here are the SFR folks that can get you involved

Mentor

The Mentor Program

The Mentor Program in SFR is modeled off a program that used to exist in SFR some years back.  The program is designed to allow graduate students to aid interested undergraduate students with the process of getting into graduate school.  Mentors provide a profile of personal information to the program coordinator, who sets up undergrads with a grad student mentor who best fits their needs and interests.  The goal of the program is to facilitate communication between graduates and undergraduates, get graduates excited about helping the SFR community and enriching the lives of its students, and ultimately to increase the confidence, success, and satisfaction of undergraduates seeking graduate degrees.

If you would like to become a mentor, have ideas, or want to be involved in another way, please contact the program coordinator:

There also exists the possibility that in the future professional mentors will be incorporated into the program that both graduate and undergraduate students could contact to get information on the job market and applying, etc.  More information is coming soon on this aspect of the Mentor Program.  If you have ideas for or want to be involved in this part, please let us know.  Thanks!

Seminar

Fall 2008 Seminar Series

“The Future of Natural Resources in PA” <link>

The SFR seminar series has been a huge success, thanks to the efforts of the SFR GSO and Seminar Series Committee, as well as SFR faculty, staff and all seminar-goers. This seminar series brings together people from the different departments within SFR, although they may not have much in common at first glance.  The series also facilitates communication across the disciplines within the school, aids in the generation of ideas and support, and promotes involvement in the school and beyond.  Plus there's food!

Seminar Series Committee::

  • Co-chair
  • Collin Shephard
    email: cms541@psu.edu
  • Funds Coordinator
  • Michael Bernard
    email: mjb567@psu.edu

    If you would like to help out with the SFR Seminar Series (general committee), you may contact Colin or Michael.  People are often needed to help with food acquisition and preparation before seminars and clean-up after seminars (i.e., scavenging leftover food).
