Steve is a doctoral candidate in Forest Products Business and Management, also pursuing a Minor in Management and Organization from the Smeal School of Business.  Currently he is investigating the adoption of voluntary environmental certification among firms in the U.S. secondary forest products industry, with a particular focus on the role of executives in the decision to adopt, or not adopt, such certification.  He is examining how executives' career experiences and psychological dispositions influence their perceptions and actions relative to voluntary environmental certification.

 

 

Eric Burkhart

Eric is an ethnobotanist, horticulturalist and agroforester.  His interests and work are centered on people and plant relationships-including the utilization, cultural role(s), and husbandry of plants by people.  He has been investigating American ginseng occurrence and husbandry in Pennsylvania since 2002 in an effort to help inform management and policy decision-making.  He is a native of the Ohio River Valley region of Pennsylvania.

Sonja is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Science with Dr. Duane Diefenbach at the Pennsylvania Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. Her research focuses on habitat use, movements, and population dynamics of white-tailed deer and sika deer on Assateague Island National Seashore. Sonja’s primary research interest is large mammal population ecology.

 Jonathan is studying fish ecology in the Allegheny, Ohio, and Monongahela Rivers of Pennsylvania.  Specifically, he is interested in the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on fish populations and communities, and in phenotyipc plasticity of darters from different habitats.

Dan completed his undergraduate degree here in forest hydrology and is now working on a master's degree in silviculture, under Eric Zenner.  His thesis is an investigation of height growth dynamics of oaks and their competitors in northern and central Pennsylvania during the first few decades of stand development.

 

 

Jeanne Hickey

Jeanne is currently working on her PhD with Dr. Eric Zenner in Forest Science.  She is studying the breeding habitat characteristics of the cerulean warbler in the Allegheny National Forest region.  She has interests in forest management/wildlife interaction, silviculture, forest structure, GIS, spatial analysis, and wetland management/wildlife interaction.
 

 

Brianna Hutchison
MS, Wildlife and Fisheries
Brianna is a student of Dr. Paola Ferreri and is pursuing an M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science.  Her thesis involves investigating fish and benthic macroinvertebrate response to the removal of small dams in two Pennsylvania streams.  Other topics that interest her include habitat and native species restoration, aquatic ecology, watershed planning, sustainability, conservation of natural resources, and environmental education.

 

 

 

Wilson Jere

Wilson, a lecturer in fish genetics in the Bunda College of Agriculture at the University of Malawi, is currently working on his PhD with Dr. Jay Stauffer.  His research will focus on the systematics and biology of a Lake Malawi molluscivorous fish Trematocranus placodon.

Sarah is currently in her first year as a PhD candidate in SFR, working with Dr. Marc Abrams in Forest Ecology and Dendroecology.

 

David Jones
MS, Environmental Pollution Control
David is employed as full-time staff in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering under Dr. Bruce Logan and is also a part-time MS student in the Environmental Pollution Control (EPC) program.  His research interests are forest health, water quality and land management. Other concerns related to his research are renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

Aubrey, originally from northwest Ohio, received her B.S. degree from the University of Michigan in Environmental Science.  She is currently doing her graduate work in Lake Erie studying planktonic diatoms and how they appear to settle and dominate the benthos of this Great Lake.

Keith’s research deals with phosphorus uptake by attached algae (periphyton) in lotic waters. He proposes to use radiotracers (33P) to perform a series of ex situ experiments comparing seasonal uptake rates of aquatic benthic algae originating from two distinct trophic levels, to provide an approximation of P-limitation of algal productivity, e.g. slower phosphate uptake may indicate saturated internal phosphorus pools and/or sufficient phosphorus supply to the algae from the water column.

Ben is currently working with Dr. Marc Abrams in forest ecology.  His research project is entitled, "Assessing the impact of historical fire regimes and prescribed burning on forest composition and structure, regeneration, and fuel loading on the Menominee Reservation."  He spent the last two summers on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin cutting basal cross sections to examine fire history, collecting vegetation data, working with SCA crews, and sampling some of Wisconsin's finest brews.

Working with Kim Steiner and Marc McDill, Collin's research will integrate ecology with economics to evaluate natural resource management on public lands.  She is from upstate New York where she attended the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry in Syracuse.  Other interests include lumberjack sports, traveling, photography, and spending time with family.

Rebecca is an MS student working with Rich Yahner.  She's looking at habitat use by rose-breasted grosbeaks in the PA Game Commission's Grouse Habitat Management Area (GHMA) at the Scotia Barrens.  She is also TA'ing Mammalogy and working with the wastewater committee monitoring wildlife at wastewater spraying fields to create a walking nature trail there.

 

 

Jenna Stites,

Jenna is a student in Wood Products Business with research interests in Organizational Behavior, Organizational Change Management, Strategic Human Resources, Corporate Social Responsibility/Performance, and Alternative Energies.  Her master's thesis is entitled "The Effect of Employee Perceptions of Corporate Social Performance on Employee Outcomes". She has previously worked on US Department of Commerce grants studying change and innovation in small- and medium-sized manufacturers, and co-authored a book chapter entitled "SME Choice of Export Market and Entry Mode: Theory and Research".   In addition, she recently co-authored a Human Resources Best Practices Manual for the Hardwood Industry.

 

 

Grant Stokke
MS, Wildlife and Fisheries
Grant works with Dr. Margaret Brittingham to study urban crow roosts through radio telemetry and regular monitoring of roosts in southeast PA, and also conducts habitat analyses of roosts across the state.  The broad objective of his research is to gain a better understanding of crow roosting behavior
to help identify effective ways to manage problematic roosts and minimize crow-human conflicts.

 

 

 

 

Victor Valdebenito

Vivek Verma; PhD
Vivek is a graduate student working in Dr. Jeffrey Catchmark and Dr. Nicole Brown's lab.  He has worked on lithography approaches to pattern molecular proteins and role of casein in supporting surface bound kinesin.  Currently he is working on synthesis and characterization of cellulose based nanocomposites.  His research interests lies in synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials/ nanocomposites.

 

 

 

Wendy Vreeland

Wendy is currently working with the PA Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit to obtain her Master's degree. She has been working with the Unit doing research for 3 years before starting classes. Her thesis will involve population modelling of data collected from PA black bears for over 30+ years. Originally from Long Island, NY she is glad to be living in the middle of rural PA.

Andy Wilson is in the final year of a PhD program in Ecology.  His research investigates the effects of farmland conservation programs on populations of grassland birds in Pennsylvania.  His general research interests are in the fields of Landscape Ecology, Ornithology and Conservation Biology.
