Graham Chapman Tribute

Historical note: the 1989 Ides of October Mystery may mark the first and only time the event has ever actually fallen in October. We try our best to actually avoid that if at all possible. If only Graham Chapman had consulted us before dying at the beginning of the month.

"What's all this, then? Silliness, in front of Old Main?"
by Alyce Wilson, from Completely Different, Oct. 18, 1989

On October 15th, a quite ordinary fall day (though it was bright, beautiful, and warm), the marble steps of Old Main resounded with a strange sound — silliness. A day that would live in infamy, this was the Monty Python Society's Great Ides-of-October Mystery Event!

We started off with a candlelight vigil, since it was broad daylight. Alyce Wilson led the short service, speaking about Graham Chapman, first in her normal voice and then in a high, squeaky one. Anyone who felt the spirit stepped forward and spoke. Then, we concluded by singing "The Philosopher's Song."

The Ides-of-October Event consisted first of a Silly Walks Competition, featuring many painfully realistic falls; second was Blackmail, hosted by Don Klees, with ornamental hostess Jenny Hoffman, in which several members of the audience pledged large sums of money to keep their dark secrets private (Thanks for the $10,000.73, Bryce-baby) [Note: This, of course, refers to then university president Bryce Jordan]; and third and finally was Spot-the-Loony, hosted by Eric Schr9ager, also with Jenny Hoffman, in which we persuaded some innocent passersby to participate.

The Great Ides-of-October Mystery Event concluded as Sgt. Patang unmasked herself and insisted that the goings-on were "too silly." The defiant members marched around the Old Main lawn singing the "Liberty Bell March" until they collapsed.
