The Icers and head Coach Joe Battista take great pride in the team’s academic accomplishments. The team regularly holds a team grade point average of at least 3.0. Additionally, the Icers have had 37 Academic All-American awards since the inception of the award in 1997 by the ACHA. Our student-athletes are in diverse majors including engineering, business, economics, education, mathematics, communications and others.
The achievements of our student athletes stem from our belief in excellence in both academic and athletics. The Icers Academic Support System was designed and is staffed by leading faculty and advisors from across campus. For new student-athletes introductory sessions on time management, note-taking, test-taking, libraries, computer technology and more make the integration into college life easier. Additionally, all players are assigned to one of eight dedicated hockey advisors who are among the best faculty and advisors at Penn State. Our system monitors and encourages scholarship but is run independent from the Coach. We also can support the use of academic tutors through our Booster Club and Endowment Fund.
Penn State varsity athletics has an 80% graduation rate compared to a 62% success rate nationwide.
Penn State Hockey has a 95+% graduation rate under Head Coach Joe Battista.
