PITTSBURGH - Oct. 5, 2002 - Competing Saturday in Pittsburgh’s Head of the Ohio regatta, Penn State Crew squeezed out a narrow victory over SUNY Buffalo to bring home the gold.
The Head of the Ohio, or HOTO, is a world-class regatta held annually on the Allegheny River in the heart of Pittsburgh, and attracts national and international competition from local high schools to US national teams.
The Penn State women’s four took first place by only one second in what has become the nation’s second largest fall regatta, defeating second-seed SUNY Buffalo for the second year in a row. In 2001, first place PSU finished ahead of Buffalo by six seconds.
“These races make me crazy, but I love them,” said Chrissy “Huge” Cohen, the women’s coxswain, after seeing the final results and discovering their small margin of victory on the 2.8 mile course.
“There was a lot of good racing today,” said Susan Saint Sing, Penn State Head Coach. “We did what we came to do.”
Penn State Crew will compete in Philadelphia at the Head of the Schuylkill Oct. 26.
