Ruling the Occoquan Sprints

     FAIRFAX, Va. - April 7, 2002 - Racing in Virginia over the weekend, Penn State Crew had two gold medal finishes and many other strong performances by the 11 crews it entered to race against some of the best rowing teams in the Mid-Atlantic conference.

     "Overall it was a good showing," said Coach John Biddle. "Everybody rowed well," giving Penn State crew a lot of confidence as they start their main competitive season.

     PSU Crew competed Sunday with nearly 30 other teams such as the University of Pittsburgh, the U.S. Naval Academy, Case Western, Duke and Virginia Tech.

     Penn State's men's varsity lightweight and heavyweight varsity fours took first place in their races, beating such crews as Pitt and Bucknell University, a friendly rival of PSU Crew. The complete list of results is available online at http://www.gmu.edu/org/crew/Regattas.htm.

     Penn State Crew will compete next weekend in Camden, NJ in the Knecht Cup regatta.
