Penn State Crew Rows Shows Prowess on Charles River

Boston, Ma – October 20, 2001 – Penn State Crew competed Saturday in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts. The Head of the Charles is the largest and most prestigious regatta in the nation, attracting over 6,000 competitors from teams such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, the U.S. Naval Academy, Georgetown, the US Rowing Team, as well as many international crews.

Penn State raced in the women’s club eight event with 55 other crews from around the world. PSU finished 28th overall, beating national teams from Ireland and Canada.

Penn State’s women gave a strong performance, finishing less than a minute off of first place. Coxswain and team president, Emily Burns, skillfully navigated the challenging river, passing six boats along the course. Burns jockeyed for position throughout the entire 5000 meters with Radcliffe only to pull away in the end with a commanding finish.

Women’s team captain, Chris Gabela said, “It was exciting to be in the first PSU women’s eight entered in the Charles and to hear the ‘We are Penn State’ cheer all along the Charles.” Penn State had a large group of supporters accompany the team to Boston to cheer PSU Crew on to victory.

Penn State competes next on October 27, 2001 in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
