Penn State Crew thrives on its fundraising efforts from on campus athletic events, family and friends,
the State College community and alumni. The heaviest fundraising push is during the fall semesters.
About 40% of the fall budget is comprised from fundraising alone. Without the success of fundraising,
Penn State Crew could not compete.
In the fall of 2011, Penn State Crew has made strides towards more fundraising opportunities that have
opened the team to the State College community. The team has continued its fundraising with the
athletic teams including men’s and women’s volleyball, field hockey, and men’s and women’s soccer.
The team works for the Nittany Lion Club inside Beaver Stadium during the home football games. This
past fall, Penn State Crew branched out downtown by holding fundraising nights at the Cold Stone
Creamery and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The team was also offered by Penn State Sports Properties,
the opportunity to help with the set up of the Fan Festival on Curtin Road before the home football
games.
We hope to continue our fundraising goals this spring of 2012. This spring we will be working at the
men’s volleyball games and there are many more events in the works. As we begin the semester, we
are offering our labor for your donation through our Rent-A-Rower program! If you need help moving
furniture, shoveling snow, mowing your lawn, or raking leaves give us a call and have a rower take care
of the manual labor! We ask for a donation of $10/rower/hour to make your life easier!
If you would like to join us in reaching our goals or donate directly to our team, please contact our
fundraising officer, Helen Clay at helentclay@gmail.com.
Thank you in advance for your support!
THON
The Penn State Dance Marathon, more commonly known as THON, is a year-long effort that raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric country. It is the largest student-run philanthropy in the country! THON began in 1973 when just a small group of students held the first dance marathon. Since then, THON has become an ever present organization in not only the Penn State community, but also the country with over 15,000 student volunteers and 700 dancers participating every year! THON has raised more than $78 million benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, and $9.56 million of that in the past year!

Penn State Crew has had much involvement with THON in the past, raising $13,180.90 last year alone! This year we are very excited that we will have two dancers, who will stand for 46 hours during THON weekend, February 17-19th! Until then, we will be busy fundraising and spreading awareness during canning trips, letter writing, and our own individual fundraisers. Learn more about THON at www.thon.org! Together we can make a difference in the life of a child.
Pull For a Cure
Each year, Penn State Crew participates in the charity event sponsored by The American Cancer Society known as "Pull For a Cure", which was started by Brown University in 2009. A member of the Brown Crew Team wanted to try and raise money for Breast Cancer and brought the team together to raise over $23,000. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as well as the month of the largest regatta in the world, The Head of the Charles Regatta. Brown raced at the Charles in pink Uni-suits and then presented the money they raised to the American Cancer Society in a ceremony after the regatta.
In our first year, Penn State raised over $5000, and we intend to continue raising money every year. We will have collections all over campus as well as State College. If you would like to donate to the cause, e-mail Nick D'Imperio at nrd5064@psu.edu.
