About the Penn State Irish Organization:
The Penn State Irish Organization was
conceived and formed in spring 1999 by a group of friends. While tailgating
after a Nittany Lion football victory the previous fall, they discussed joining
an Irish club to learn more about their heritage. Upon looking through a list of
university clubs and finding none related to the Irish, they decided it was time
to begin one. At the start of the spring semester, they got together, wrote a
constitution and on April 23, 1999, the organization was formed.
The Irish have long loved celebrations, and those are a big part of our club. We
regularly sponsor dances, Irish Ceili (musical gatherings) and cookouts, among
other activities. In addition, our club strives to bring awareness of Ireland's
history and current events to Penn State by e-mailing members updates of
important developments in Ireland. The club also sponsors regular film showings
and festivals to promote awareness of Ireland's past and present.
Minutes From 11/14 Meeting:
1) T-shirts. Got most of them handed out, but
there are a few people who ordered (and paid) for one, and were not there. If
this describes you, please let me know so I can get them out to ya. And for the
rest of you, who did not order one, we have extras. They make excellent gifts
for that scary roommate that just moved in. Who doesn’t love the Irish?
2) Irish Dinner. There will be an Irish Dinner (and I’ll be e-mail more about
this as time approaches) on January 23rd (two Mondays from now). 7pm-ish.
Guinness Stew once again. Jess has volunteered to make soda bread again, and a
member is bringing paper stuff (I have significantly fewer dishes, these days).
If anyone wants to sign up for anything (plasticware, cups, soda, etc.) please
me know. Thanks very much.
3) Kate Mackay graduated this past December. As such, we had no Secretary. I
asked for candidates/volunteers towards the end of last semester, and only one
person wanted it. So, with no votes of dissent at the meeting, you have a new
secretary. Megan Matheny. And you’ll be hearing from her, just as soon as I can
figure out how to get her on the listserv.
4) Movie Nights. Instead of having 2-3 meetings each month, I’m going to suggest
that we keep a running list of movies that we can watch as a group. Maybe have
one movie night every other week, or something. Pending interest levels, we
should start out with once a month. Michael Collins is at the top of list, your
VP has been on my case for months about that. So, yea. You’ll have details as
they’re decided. If you have an idea, or would like to come, please let me know.
