As hybrids gobble rare metals, shortage looms               Demand is expected to exceed supply by 40,000 tons in a few years

Hybrid cars are known for their environmental friendliness when it comes to fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, Neodymium, a metal used to make magnets for electric motors, and 14 other rare metals used in the production process are in high demand and researchers predict major shortages. Neodymium is also used in the production of generators for wind turbines. Turbine and hybrid production is expected to rise quickly, so U.S. and Chinese automakers like Toyota, are looking for rare earth metal sites to meet the growing demand.
