  Rockfall in Boones Shower Cave
8/18/99

Trip members:Bryan Crowell and Ned Schmidgal

This trip was to make sure that the cave could be entered on a trip planned for Sunday. We were a bit concerned since the entrance is a bit unstable and no one had been to the cave in over a year.

I picked up Ned at 7:30 AM (Yes, amazingly he was awake and ready!!), and drove to the cave. Ned and I cleared the entrance of loose rocks and other debris. Entered under Keith Christenson's "floating couch" boulder. The flume was bone dry. Went into the Anthrax area, where we pushed several leads. A previous lead I had found with Dave Bookhammer that ended in water was now dry. We didn't have the necessary digging implements, so we planned to return with them on Sunday, which was the scheduled trip.

On exiting, Ned stabilized a hanging ceiling rock. Two fell out when he removed a small rock (3 lbs). The SMALLER of the falling rocks weighed 300+ lbs., the larger was probably around a half ton, all held in by a small rock that he easily removed by hand. We also noted some new breakdown in the cave since last year. Still not a cave to be taken lightly. We exited the cave (dry, a first) and returned home with Ned having 20 minutes to shower and make it to work. Good enough.
