About Lutheran Campus Ministry
Lutheran Student Community at Penn State is the official student organization connected with the Lutheran ministries in State College. LSC is directly connected with Lutheran Campus Ministry at Penn State, the campus ministry connected to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Lutheran Campus Ministry works with students of any faith tradition, bringing a Lutheran perspective to the campus community. We also work across denominational lines and other religious groups on campus and elsewhere. The Lutheran Student Community is a community of students who are involved with student ministry on campus as well as students from Grace Lutheran Church (a congregation of the ELCA) in downtown State College, and other churches in the area as well.
Worship is a central aspect of Lutheran Campus Ministry. You can participate in worship in a number of settings and a variety of ways. All of our worship services are open to the campus community and everyone is welcome to participate as a member of the gathered community. If you would like to participate in public leadership at worship, you can read lessons, sing with the choir, play piano or another insturment in the worship leadership team, help host and welcome, or serve communion. You can help lead a study or discussion with other students and our staff. You can also help in the "behind the scenes" leadership by welcoming people as they come to worship or programs, help set up for worship (sacristan), bake communion bread, help prepare a Sunday or Thursday dinner, and loads of other ways of getting involved!
A nurturing community life also characterizes Lutheran Campus Ministry. Some of the activities which bring us together include:
- Home cooked dinners each week
- Bible Studies and disucssions
- Service-Learning Events
- Retreats
- Hayrides, movie nights, broom ball, picnics, and many other social events throughout the semester
Arising from our worship and our life together is a focus on service, welcoming, and outreach. These activities have included:
- Service trips to inner cities and places affected by disaster
- Work with the State College Area Food Bank to help fight hunger
- Habitat for Humanity Workdays
- Singing and visiting with residents at The Oaks Retirement Community in Pleasant Gap
- Working at the Easter Seals child care center
- Volunteering at the Allegheny Synod Senior High Youth Event as small group leaders
- Volunteering at the SPCA with dogs and cats looking for good homes
If you are interested in taking part in some or all of these activities, let us know! You can contact Lutheran Campus Ministry at lutheran@psu.edu.
