Our club was founded and is taught by Mr. James Del Real. For over 30 years, Mr. Del Real and his assistant instructors have been teaching at Penn State. The basic goals of our club are to teach a style of Martial Arts that provides practical self-defense, promotes physical and mental strength, and improves self-confidence and self-esteem.
Our style of karate is derived from, but not limited to Tae Kwon Do, a strong Korean Martial Art form. To make a stronger and more effective system, our teachings incorporate a wide range of styles from American Boxing to Jujitsu and "street-wise fighting". For advanced students, weapons and ground fighting are also incorporated.
The club workouts consist of aerobic conditioning, strength exercises, stretching, technique, sparring, kata, and self-defense. Beginners start in a separate class taught by their own instructor for their first semester. This beginners class emphasizes stretching, self-defense, and techniques necessary for the first belt rank. Students with previous Martial Arts experience are invited to work out with the advanced class, which has the benefit of several black belts present to instruct. Mondays and Wednesdays are our formal workout class times. Saturdays and Sundays are our "Open Workouts". This workout gives everyone the freedom to work out at his or her own pace. Heavy bags, focus mitts, kicking shields and other equipment are available, and students can get personal instruction. Saturday/Sunday Open Workouts also provide an opportunity for people who are interested in the club to come in and talk to the members and experience what makes our club so unique.
Our Belt Ranks are as follows: White, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, Black.
The dues for our club are $65 per semester. This money is not needed up front. Attendance is not mandatory, but crucial if you want to improve and advance. We encourage people to work out with us for a couple of weeks before we require payment of dues.
Our club is open to anyone who is interested -- all you need is the desire to learn and improve yourself. If you are interested, please go to the Contact page and e-mail the club president with your name, email address and/or phone number.
