About Kalliope

Kalliope, Penn State's undergraduate literary magazine, is sponsored by the Penn State English Department. The magazine is produced by a student staff and supervised by Sheila Squillante. The purpose of Kalliope is to further the ideals of free and open literary expression by establishing a writing community as well as providing a literary outlet through the publication of the literary magazine, public readings, and lectures.

Kalliope includes works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. The selection process begins late in the Fall semester and ends early Spring semester. It is followed by the production process, in which the magazine is designed and assembled. The resulting publication is printed and distributed before the year is out.

The name "Kalliope" is derived from the Greek Muse of Epic Poetry. One of the nine Muses of the arts and sciences, Kalliope was called on by early Greek writers and artists for inspiration.
