Traditional Korean Weapons

In Jung Sim Do the usage of traditional Korean weapons is taught. These weapons include Kum (or sword), Bong (long stick) and short stick.

Weapons training in Jung Sim Do begins at the yellow stripe level (approximately 5 gups into training) with the first Sword form. Much like the Tae Kwon Do training, the weapons training also involves the use of poomse. When learning a weapon the important factor for the student is to understand and feel the weapon, to be completely familiar with its length, shape and weight, so that it will act as an extension of your own body. Much like Tae Kwon Do forms, weapons forms teach a student balance, coordination, and control over their body and their weapons. In addition to learning about a weapon, the students also gain insight into their own bodies, and begin to expand their views on nature and on themselves. With familiarity of weapons comes a deeper understanding of strength, motion, balance, and range. These ancient weapons also serve as a bridge, that connects the past to the present and onto the future. All of which are an integral part of understanding oneself.

"The art of the sword consists of never being concerned with victory or defeat, with strength or weakness, of not moving one step forward, nor one step backward, or the enemy not seeing me and my not seeing the enemy. Penetrating to that which is fundamental before the separation of heaven and earth where even yin and yang cannot reach, one instantly attains proficiency in the art" -Yagyu Munenori, Master Swordsman
