Our History

The Penn State Indoor Drumline's first endeavor into the competitive world of indoor percussion theater was in the spring of 1999 when the group made its debut in the Independent Open Class of Winter Guard International (WGI). The very next season, in 2000, the Penn State Indoor Drumline celebrated its first championship season, winning the gold medal in the WGI Independent Open Class. The Penn State Indoor Drumline had quickly made a name for itself within the WGI circuit and was looking for more. 2001 marked the group's entrance into the WGI Independent World Class, the highest class of international competition. The Penn State Indoor Drumline went on the qualify for the WGI Independent World finals competition that year, further solidifying the group's place among the elite indoor percussion ensembles in the country. For the next 2 seasons, the Penn State Indoor Drumline continued to produce highly intricate and entertaining programs, qualifying for finals in both 2002 and 2003. In 2004, the Penn State Indoor Drumline opened its membership to include talented percussionists that were not Penn State students. This proved to be a successful combination. The group traveled to San Diego, California to once again compete against the world's best indoor percussion ensembles and came away with yet another satisfying season. In 2005, Penn State returned to the WGI Independant Open class marking a rebuilding season for the ensemble. The very next season in 2006, Penn State increased it's rankings in the Percussion Open Class to not only succeed in making finals, but capturing the Bronze Medal. This year, again in the Independant Open Class, the Penn State Indoor Drumline seeks another highly successful and educational season.
