HER co-editors participate in panel discussion
Brad Cox & Meghan Pifer, co-editors of Higher Education in Review, participated in a panel discussion about helping students get published in peer-reviewed journals. The brown bag lunch took place on Thursday, February 5, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in 403 Rackley Building.

The panel offered a variety of "insider" perspectives about what editors are really looking for in a manuscript submitted for publication. Joining the HER co-editors were three prominent Penn State College of Education researchers: Kai Schafft, Editor of the Journal of Research in Rural Education, Roger Geiger, Editor of Perspectives on the History of Higher Education, and David Post, Editor of Comparative Education Review. The session also explored the following topics:

  • The process of publishing - what actually happens to a manuscript after its submitted;
  • The purpose of publishing - why publishing is important to both your career as an academic and the field in which you work;
  • What makes a good manuscript? General guidelines and idiosyncratic insights;
  • And where graduate students often err - a handful of common shortcomings editors often see in manuscripts written by graduate students.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Brad or Megan.

Editors introduce HER to graduate students at 2008 ASHE conference
Co-Editors Meghan Pifer and Brad Cox were busy this past November in Jacksonville, FL, at the 2008 annual conference of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. The duo spoke at each of the four Graduate Student Sessions, introducing and distributing HER to several hundred students in the process. Volume 5 unveiled (May, 2008)
This volume of Higher Education in Review (HER) marks the fifth anniversary of the Journal and presents an opportunity to celebrate its success. It also is an important time for the Journal’s Editorial Board to take stock – to consider where we have been and where we are headed. In 2007-08, the number of manuscripts submitted tripled with respect to the previous volume, and submitting authors were more diverse and represented a wider variety of institutions than ever before in our history. With this growth came both the excitement of success and more than a few growing pains... (read more)

Past HER Editors to present at HEPAC Symposium (May, 2008)
Jennifer M. Domagal-Goldman and Betty J. Harper, HER Volume 5 Co-Editors, and other past HER editors will present at the Higher Education Program Alumni Council (HEPAC) 2008 Symposium. Their presentation examines the phenomenon of student learning and development within the collective and collaborative experience of conceptualizing and launching a student-edited, scholarly journal. “Communities of practice” and related sociocultural theories serve as the framework within which this experience is analyzed and evaluated.
