The GSA Judiciary Committee governs the application and status of graduate student organizations at Penn State (undergraduate organizations are governed through the office of Associated Student Activities).
Student Organizations whose members are primarily (but not exclusively) graduate students may apply to the Judiciary Committee of the GSA to become an official, registered organization. Registered organizations may hold meetings on campus, reserve rooms, deposit funds with and request funds from the University.
To become a registered student organization, the representative of the organization should collect an application from the GSA Office. This application contains information on creating a constitution and details the basic rules governing student organizations on campus. It also contains two forms that must be filled out -- the Application Form and the Officers List -- and a request for a list of members. When this application has been completed, the Judiciary Committee evaluates the application and remains in contact with the organization's representative until the organization has been approved as a registered organization.
The newly registered organization will be classified as "Provisional" which means that the organization is now recognized by the university and may hold meetings on campus and deposit its funds with ASA (Associated Student Activities, 202 HUB). This status last for one semester.
When that semester has passed, the organization must apply for "Permanent" or "Full" status. This allows the organization to reserve rooms and to gain access to funds through SOBC (Student Organization Budget Committee). Once an organization has achieved this status, it only needs to submit a current officers list to the GSA Office every year. If it does not submit a yearly officers list, the status of the organization will revert to "Inactive" and the whole process must be completed again to regain "Provisional" or "Full" status. |
