Penn State's Medical/Dental brigades combines the disciplines of
Medical and Dental into one chapter. Medical Brigades take place in
all four countries, Honduras, Panama, Ghana, and Nicaragua, whereas Dental Brigades take place only in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana. Often times, Medical and Dental Brigades will be conducted simultaneously in a single clinic within communities.
The mission of Medical Brigades is to work with licensed medical professionals and community health workers to provide comprehensive health services in rural communities with limited access to healthcare. Medical Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed doctors in medical consultations and assist in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. Volunteers' duties include assisting during the triage and intake of patients, helping to pack medications in the pharmacy, and assisting with health education workshops. Regardless of medical skill level, there is a role for any type of volunteer and the chance to learn about providing sustainable healthcare to rural communities who would otherwise have limited access.
Dental Brigades' mission is to provide immediate, restorative and preventative dental services in rural communities without access to oral care otherwise. Dental Brigade volunteers have the opportunity to shadow licensed dentists while also assisting with dental hygiene workshops.
