![]() | Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Is the Penn State Fencing Club same organization as the PSU Fencing Team?We get this question a lot. The club is a separate entity from the Varsity team. You can visit their site here. Q: I've never fenced before. Can I still join the club?Of course! The Penn State Fencing Club is for all levels of experience and fitness. More than half of the people who join the club each year have never fenced before. Each night the club warms up together, doing stretches and exercises. Then an instructor takes those who have not fenced before on the side for a small-group lesson. Everyone else does blade- and foot-work drills for a little bit. Finally, there is "open fencing," where members suit up and fence whomever is not fencing at the moment. This gives everyone a good chance to fence everyone else in the club. Q: What do I need to bring to practice? Will I need to buy special equipment?Club safety regulations require everyone to have all parts of their body covered while fencing. This means you should wear sweatpants and sneakers to practice. If you have a choice of sneakers, wear your old pair; shoes can be prematurely aged by fencing. The club provides all other equipment, so you won't need to worry about buying your own stuff right away. NOTE: Jeans and street shoes may not be worn to practice. Q: How much does it cost to join the club?Currently the cost is $35 for the semester and $60 for the year (fall and spring semesters). Members with a USFA membership will receive a $10 discout for a year membership and a $5 discount per semester. New members are allowed to practice with the club for two weeks before paying dues. This gives you a chance to try fencing and see if you like it before you pay. We recommend, but do not require, USFA membership also for those who have fenced more than one semester. Q: Sign me up! How do I go about in joining?Stop by any one of our practices!
