For interested Canadian musicophiles:
Great Big Sea
Thursday, April 19th, 8pm
The Rex Theatre, Pittsburgh PA
Tickets are $26
www.greatbigsea.com
The Tragically Hip
Sunday, April 22nd, 7pm
Chameleon Club, Lancaster PA
$18 advance, $20 at the door (all-ages show)
www.thehip.com
www.chameleonclub.net
Tickets for both shows available from www.ticketmaster.com
Get your tickets before they're sold-out. There are Canadian Club members
planning on going to one or both shows. This is your chance to see great
Canadian bands in intimate club settings (The Rex has a capacity of 420, the
Chameleon Club is bigger, but still much smaller than anywhere you'd see the Hip
in Canada).
Note: I went to the Tragically Hip show, and it was
awesome. The Chameleon Club holds a few hundred people. A pretty big
club, but a club nonetheless. Maybe a little bigger than Toronto's
Horseshoe or El Mocambo, or State College's former Crowbar, with a downstairs
bar area, and an upstairs wrap-around balcony and outdoor tiki bar. The
crowd was an eclectic mix of older and younger, many Canadian ex-pat now living
in and around Eastern Pa, and a surprising number of ex-Buffalonians.
The opening band was the Constantines from Toronto (or at least the Toronto area) who I've been fortunate to see before, and an excellent band to see themselves, let alone open for the 'Hip. The 'Hip themselves were, of course, excellent. Gord Downie showed once again why he's one of rock's top frontmen, while they played a mix of 'Hip classics and newer material. They wrapped it up by playing a cover of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time." And all this in a venue where you literally almost could have reached out and touched the 'Hipster of your choice.

detailed description. It's FREE.

"Bovell explores love, marriage, strangeness,
intimacy, trust, betrayal, obsession, self-punishment and detachment with
generous emotional intelligence." -Observer (London)
Andrew Bovell has crafted an intriguing, thrilling and engaging drama through
the imaginative use of separate but interlinked stories. In unusual
circumstances that draw strangers together while exposing chasms between
partners, SPEAKING IN TONGUES unfolds as a complex mystery of infidelity and
deceit.
THE STORY: In the first act of this unusual and engaging Australian "mystery"
play, two couples in unstable marriages inadvertently exchange partners in a
night of adulterous encounters. The situations in the separate hotel rooms are
so similar that at times both couples speak the same words. The repercussions
for both marriages are profound. In the second act we are introduced to a
psychologist and her husband. The psychologist has disappeared on a deserted
road after her car broke down. Was she murdered and, if so, why? As the play
progresses and revelatory details accumulate, these two seemingly disparate
stories become linked in a chain of coincidences that leads to a surprising
conclusion.

The staff at Findlay Commons will be preparing the poutine, to be served at a Canadiana-decorated table by Canadian Club members where we will inform interested students about the wonders of Canada. Stop by for some FREE poutine, and let the executive know if you'd like to help serve poutine and help at the table for this event.

The president of the European

us) to a
party on Saturday, September 30th at the University Club.
This will of course be after our tailgate so it promises to be a day of non-stop celebration.
The University Club is located at the corner of College and Atherton.
This will be an excellent opportunity for us to socialize with our current and future European friends. Hope to see you there.
Hockey Fans:
Well, it's that time of the year again. The time when everyone's favourite team
can win the Stanley Cup (even my much beloved and maligned Maple Leafs). Very
few players are severely concussed. It's probably going to snow any day now.
Don Cherry has yet to insult every Swede ever born. That's right, the start of
the NHL hockey season is just around the corner.
It's also time to get the first annual Penn State Canadian Club fantasy hockey
pool off and skating. I've set up a FREE fantasy hockey pool through Yahoo.
You need a (free) Yahoo account to play. The league is limited to 15 teams. If
there is sufficient interest (i.e. more than 15 teams), I'll create another
league so that we can all play. Let me know if you have any trouble or problems
signing up. The fantasy draft will be run sometime between Friday September 29
and Monday, October 2nd. So, if you're interested please ensure that you've
signed up by the 29th, otherwise you may be out of luck. Sooner is better,
especially if we need to create another league.
This will be a great opportunity to go head-to-head with some of your fellow
Hosers in our (unofficial) national sport, so sign up today!
For details on how to sign up, please
