We would like to welcome you to our website. Certainly, in graduate school, you will be searching for opportunities for professional development, networking, fellowship, and involvement. As the organization for graduate students of color, the Black Graduate Student Association provides its members with those opportunities and more by sponsoring social mixers, information sessions, developmental workshops and conferences, community service activities and cultural celebrations. We are sure that you will find that these initiatives will assist in making your time here at Penn State both enjoyable and rewarding.

BGSA serves an active role in initiating peer support, professional development, networking, and advocacy on behalf of the membership. Furthermore, the organization serves as a social change agent, addressing the needs of the local community. BGSA continues to fulfill these important roles throughout the Penn State community by sponsoring social, academic, and professional development events including First Friday Socials, celebration of African American History Month, and the annual Achievement Conference. |

Social: As a graduate student, hard work is a fact of your life. Through numerous social events including First Fridays, Welcome Back Cookout, and various road trips, BGSA offers many avenues to unwind from a tough academic week
Community Service: BGSA recognizes community service as an integral part of its mission. BGSA community service programs include Belize penpals, Thanksgiving and Easter baskets drive and the Prisonner outreach readership initiative.
Cultural: Trhoughout the year, BGSA celebrates a number of events significant to African American's culture and history. During the month of December, Kwanzaa is celebrated with an annual extravaganza. Furthermore, BGSA hosts a number of events during February in celebration of black history month. Programs include a Quiz Bowl and the African American Read-In.
Education: BGSA understands the importance of reaching out and helping African American youths. Through collaboration with the local high school, a mentoring program is in place to promote the pursuance of higher education by youth of color.
Professional Development: One of the most important goals of BGSA is to promote the academic achievement and professional development of its members. As such, BGSA co-sponsors the Annual Achievement Conference. |
