1. WHAT IS BETA ALPHA PSI? |
|
|
Beta Alpha Psi is a national scholastic and professional fraternity for Financial Information students and professionals. The primary objective of the fraternity is to encourage and give recognition to scholastic and professional excellence in the business information field. This includes promoting the study and practice of accounting, finance and information systems; providing opportunities for self-development, service and association among members and practicing professionals, and encouraging a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility. Beta Alpha Psi was founded in 1919. By 2002 there were nearly 238 chapters on college and university campuses with over 200,000 members initiated since the fraternity's formation. 2. WHY IS INVOLVEMENT IN BAP IMPORTANT? Beta Alpha Psi is recognized nationally and internationally. Many of the recruiters who come to Penn State realize the significance of Beta Alpha Psi. Many of our alumni work at the firms and companies that recruit on campus so they know what Beta Alpha Psi stands for. What you receive from Beta Alpha Psi depends on what you put into the organization. Members are encouraged to attend all professional and service activities to develop into a well rounded professional. 3. WHAT IF I AM IN ANOTHER FRATERNITY OR SORORITY? Beta Alpha Psi is purely a scholastic and professional society designed to develop student’s professional skills to enter the workforce. It does not matter what other organizations students may be a part of, you can still join Beta Alpha Psi and be an active member in all of the organizations that you are apart of. Any student, at any point in their academic career can be involved in Beta Alpha Psi. The only requirement is that the student must intend to or already be enrolled in Finance, Accounting, or MIS major. Students do not have to meet the grade requirements in order to join. 5. WHAT IS THE GRADE REQUIREMENT TO BE INITIATED INTO BAP? In order to be initiated, students must have a 3.0 Cumulative GPA and a 3.2 GPA in upper level Accounting, Finance, or MIS classes. (only 300/400 level courses count; the Junior Core is excluded) prior to initiation, which takes place in the subsequent semester. If a student has not yet taken any upper-level courses but has completed the pledging requirements, then he/she will be initiated upon completion of any of the initial upper-level course (e.g. Finance 305W, Finance 408, Accounting 311, MS&IS 391, or MIS 431) 6. WHAT IF I DON’T COMPLETE THE CANDIDACY REQUIREMENTS IN ONE SEMESTER? That’s fine. Beta Alpha Psi realizes that students are extremely busy and sometimes go abroad or on co-op and cannot complete the requirements. Students can take as many semesters needed to complete the pledging requirements. However, we strongly stress active involvement throughout the student’s Beta Alpha Psi career. 7. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO REMAIN AN ACTIVE MEMBER AFTER INITIATION? In order to remain as active members’ students must participate in 4 professional activities and two service activities each semester. Students meeting this requirement will be recognized at the Spring Banquet. |
