What is AED?
Alpha Epsilon Delta is the National Health Preprofessional Honor Society dedicated to the encouragement and recognition of excellence in preprofessional health scholarship, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary, and others. The Society welcomes ALL students engaged in the pursuit of a professional healthcare career. (NationalAED.org)
What happens during the meetings?
Meetings are held every other week (Link to CALENDER) and are open to anyone. At the meetings, we host a wide variety of health professionals delineating their personal experiences and answering any questions that members may have. Additionally, we may discuss club activities, however individual committee meetings will also be held throughout the semester.
What is AED involved in at Penn State?
AED is involved in many different events, socials, fundraisers, and community service projects. These include, but are not limited to, PSU/MSU Blood Donors Challenge and AED Blood Cup, THON, and AED/HPA Public Health Fair.
I'm not eligible to become an honors member yet, can I still come to meetings/socials/service events?
Yes!! Anyone can be a general member. Everyone interested in a health professions career is welcome. We consider anyone active in our organization to be a general member. First year students, while unable to become honors members, are still encouraged to participate!
What can AED offer me?
AED is a nationally known pre-medical honor society with an active chapter (PA Beta) at the Penn State University Park campus. Becoming a member of an honor society gives you recognition for your hours of hard work and studying, and because AED is oriented towards health professions, you get to learn a lot about your future career in the process. AED provides a great way to get involved on campus, while accumulating service hours and leadership roles that are looked favorably upon by medical schools. During the school year, we bring you a diverse group of speakers and presentations as well as chances to get involved and make a difference in the lives of others- something you should get used to as a future health professional!
Is AED only for pre-med majors?
No! While many members are planning to become physicians, AED welcomes students from a wide variety of majors interested in all types of health care professions - allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, podiatry, physical therapy, and various allied health services.
What are the membership expenses?
Membership dues are a one-time expense paid at the time of initiation. This fee is used for the initiation banquet, chapter dues, and for programming. For the 03-04 school year, membership dues were 85 dollars.
Who can be an honors member?
Anyone, regardless of class standing or membership status, is eligible to participate in the honors program. To participate, indicate your interest to the Vice President of Membership, then remember to sign in at meetings and turn in credit hour forms (located in 213 Whitmore). We will keep a record of which semesters you accumulate honors membership (think of it like the Dean's List for AED) and will send an updated list to the Pre-Health Evaluations Committee every semester.
What's the benefit of being inducted?
While our meetings, events, and honors program are open to anyone, we encourage those who are eligible to take the additional step and become formally inducted members of our honor society. Upon acceptance of your application, you will be invited to our Spring Induction Banquet, will be a national member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, and will be able to include your honor society membership on your resume forever.
