The Student Activity Server has been renamed to the Penn State Student Organizations Web Service and is under new management. These Web pages may be out of date and will be moved to the new site in the near future. Please read http://www.clubs.psu.edu/info/ for information about the new service.
This tutorial will demonstrate how to use the SSH Secure File Transfer client (SFTP) to copy files to the Student Activity Server.
First you must install the Secure FTP client for Windows if you haven't already done so. You can download the client (part of the SSH Secure Shell program) from https://www.work.psu.edu/access/ssh/.
After you have installed the SSH client, run the
from the SSH Secure Shell Start Menu folder.
Select the
button.
In the dialog box, type in the following information:
Host Name: sftp.clubs.psu.edu
User Name: <your PSU Access Account username>
![]() |
Fill out the dialog box like the image, but type in |
Type in your password when prompted.
You should then see your home directory. Here's what it looks like for jcd144:
Note: If you were to double-click on the
directory, you could update your personal web space.
Let's go to your clubs space now. Select
from the
drop-down menu.
Type in /clubs/<your group directory> for the folder name.
![]() |
Type in as shown, but use <your group directory> instead of clubs_example. |
Note: /clubs/ is a shortcut for /.../dce.psu.edu/fs/services/www/clubs/wwwroot/.
You can copy and paste files between Windows Explorer and the Secure FTP window. To do so, first start Windows Explorer and browse to the directory where your files are.
Next, select
from the
drop down menu. This will select all of the files in the directory.
Then, select
from the
drop down menu. This will copy the files you have selected to the clipboard.
Now, switch back to the Secure FTP window. Select
from the
drop down menu.
Finally you should see your files upload. Once they have finished copying to the server, you should see them in the Secure FTP window.
In addition to copy-and-paste, you can also click-and-drag between Windows Explorer and Secure FTP the same way you click and drag within Windows.
