Chi Gamma Iota (XGI) Veterans Fraternity

Chi Gamma Iota, a scholastic honor society, was founded at the University of Illinois in 1947 to encourage scholastic and civic responsibility among honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces... (Originally) Primary consideration for membership in the organization was high scholastic average. Selection of active members was also based upon practicality and sociability. In scholarship, members had to be ranked among the upper 20 percent of their class. The status of "Honorary Membership" could be conferred upon any person not eligible for active membership and three of these members were selected each year. The aim of the honorary was to form a continuing esprit de corps among its members.
During the post-Vietnam years, XGI was a thriving veterans organization at Penn State Harrisburg. It remained an active and strong organization up through 1997, but after 1997, interest in XGI began to decline. In early 2004, a renewed interest in XGI formed and the organization began to see growth once again.

Since that time, the organization has re-emerged as an active and flourishing club at Penn State Harrisburg. The leadership of XGI has re-evaluated XGI's mission and made changes to help XGI better achieve its mission--serving military veterans. We expanded our vision to include not only veterans, but active and reserve servicemembers as well. We are moving forward with our goal to build a stronger veterans organization that will be able to reach out to every veteran on campus.

Currently, XGI has 64 members and 2 advisora. We hold one community event, two service events, and two social events each year. Unfortunately, very few of the more than 450 veterans on campus are aware of XGI. We are here to serve all servicemembers and veterans by helping them make a successful transition to college. We support veterans as they pursue higher education, a building block toward achieving a stronger future for themselves and their families.
