Penn State Cycling and The Nicole Reinhart Fund
The Penn State cycling club participates in a wide variety of cycling
activities, one of them is intercollegiate racing. The club is a member
of the National Collegiate Cycling Association (NCCA) and the Eastern
Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC). These organizations sanction
races throughout the school year. The club fields teams in track,
mountain, cyclocross, and road races.
Penn State University does not support its club sports programs to
the same extent as it does “varsity” programs. Most of the expenses
incurred by the racers are covered personally or through fund raising
activities. Racing can be expensive, as the ECCC covers all of the
Northeast. A typical ECCC weekend race involves travel, entry fees,
and overnight housing. Additionally we ALWAYS qualify for the National
Championships and always try to send a competitive team. These championships
are spread throughout the country. In order to stay competitive, we
need financial support. The Nicole Reinhart Memorial Fund is providing
an avenue for Penn State Cycling to gain that support.
The Nicole Reinhart Memorial Fund was established in memory of Nicole
Reinhart, an international level cyclist who was killed in a bicycle
race in 2000. Because of my close relationship with Nicole, the fund
granted a $3000 fund to Penn State Cycling for a female cycling scholarship.
As another service to Penn State the fund will accept donations that
are earmarked to Penn State Cycling and will turn that money over
to the club. This means that 100% of any donation will go directly
to the club. Also, you can designate a specific purpose. (Mountain
bike racing, team travel etc.)
