
Student Organizations at Penn State Behrend
ACADEMIC COUNCIL ORGANIZATIONS
Accounting Club: Helps promote Penn State Erie's accounting program. This group provides opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge in the field of accounting.
Alternative Energy Club: AEC is a way for Behrend students to meet people that have similar interests in clean energy and its uses, and to provide an opportunity to make a difference in the environment and increase awareness of alternative energy.
Association for Women in Communication: A professional and international organization that champions the advancement of women across all communications disciplines.
Astronomy Club: Members make use of the new Mehalso Observatory and the college's older observatory to promote interest in astronomy to the campus community. The club also takes trips to other sites such as the Toronto Observatory in Ontario.
Biology Club: Seeks to broaden members' knowledge of biology and related fields. In addition to having speakers discuss career opportunities, the club also sponsors educational trips. The club helps enlighten the community about various aspects of the past, present, and future biological world.
Chemistry Club : Chemistry Club helps members and the campus community understand the field of chemistry. Club members recently made trips to the Medical Foundation of Buffalo and attended a regional conference at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
Delta Sigma Pi: An international business fraternity, which sponsors events, community service projects, and social and athletic activities.
Financial Management Association: Assists in the professional, educational, and social development of college students' interested in finance, banking, and investments.
Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers: IEEE provides members with information about various aspects of electrical engineering and electronics. The organization hosts successful professionals to speak to its members about opportunities within electrical engineering.
Lambda Pi Eta: Lambda Pi Eta recognizes, fosters, and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies; stimulates interest in the field of communication; promotes and encourages professional development among communication majors; provides an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communications.
Management Information Systems Club: The mission of the Penn State Behrend MIS Club is to provide a solid foundation for the School of Business students beyond the classroom by encouraging professional development and increasing exposure to the Management Information System Industry.
Marketing Club: Affiliated with the American Marketing Association (AMA), provides students with the opportunity to expand their resumes and display their creative marketing attributes.
Mathematics Club: Brings together students who have a common interest in math. Members meet for problem sessions, speakers, videotapes, and discussion.
Mechanical Engineering Club : Provides members with academic support and various perspectives of the mechanical engineering field. The club offers lectures on employment opportunities and interviewing skills. Members also attend regional conferences at which they meet other professionals in the field.
Pre-Health Professions Club: Provides Behrend students with the resources for preparation in health related professional studies. Students will work closely with professional advisors. The club will also sponsor a speakers series.
Psychology Club: Sponsors events and forums that relate to psychology. The organization has sponsored speakers from the local rape crisis center and recently hosted the daughter of a Nazi concentration camp survivor.
Society of Automotive Engineers: provides an opportunity for mechanical engineering students to learn about automotive engineering through hands-on design and construction of an off-road Baja vehicle as part of an intercollegiate competition.
Society of Physics Students : Provides opportunities for students to meet and discuss physics and related topics. Students recently visited the Glenn NASA Research Center and the Sandusky Nuclear Power Plant in Ohio.
Society of Undergraduate Economists: An academic organization that furthers the understanding of the business community with an emphasis on economics.
Society of Women Engineers: Informs the community of engineering principles and the educational opportunities available to students. It encourages women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement.
Spanish Club (Club De Espanol La Pena): The Club offers an opportunity to continue speaking Spanish outside the classroom, to build friendships through social activities, and to experience Spanish culture. Open to all students regardless of his or her level of Spanish language ability.
ARTS COUNCIL ORGANIZATIONS
Art Club: Draws fellow artists from the Behrend community to create a rich environment to build on distinct and creative thoughts and Greek Life Councils expressions.
Gospel Choir: "Ultimate Praise", students from a variety of different backgrounds coming together to perform at Behrend, churches, and universities.
evelops a general appreciation of the theatre and provides experience in various phases of theatrical production. The troupe usually presents three or four productions each year. Auditions are held throughout the academic year.Music Society: Enriches the Penn State Erie community by providing quality musical activities. The Penn State Behrend Choir, a part of the Music Society, was selected recently to join other college choirs from across the nation to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Members of the Music Society also belong to Penn State Behrend's Pep Band and perform at basketball games.
Roundtable Society : Offers literary programming and student support. The Roundtable holds a student and faculty picnic, Cold Turkey, Dubious Taste, and gives support to any student organization that holds a literary event. Cold Turkey is a casual poetry reading around Thanksgiving that features a small turkey dinner. Dubious Taste is a chance for students and professors to poke fun at the literature they are required to read and teach.
Screen Visions Film Club: SVF will organize various film events dealing with fringe, independent and classic films that are not part of the contemporary commercial studio system.
INTERFRATERNITY AND PANHELLENIC ORGANIZATIONS
Interfraternity Council (IFC): the governing body on campus for social fraternities. The council has co-sponsored with the Panhellenic Council the Welcome Cookout Musicfest for new students, and other similar activities. IFC also coordinates the annual Greek Week events with the Panhellenic Council.
Panhellenic Council: the governing body for social sororities. The council has co-sponsored with the Interfraternity Council the Welcome Cook-Out, Musicfest for new students and similar activities. The council also sponsors a full week of rush activities, designed to promote Greek Life.
Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority : a national service and social sorority. The sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha hold fund-raisers throughout the year to raise money for their national philanthropy project.
Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority : a national service and social sorority. Among their activities, the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau commit their personal time to Adopt-A-Highway.
Delta Chi Fraternity : an international social fraternity whose members are involved in campus and community services. They hold many service events such as a Bowl-a-thon, which raises money for the Second Harvest Food Bank. The fraternity has won the Greek Week competition three years in a row.
Kappa Delta Rho: a fraternity that recognizes the need for scholastic achievement, intellectual honesty, community service, and personal and group fiscal responsibility.
Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity : a national service and social fraternity. The brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma sponsor an annual Sand Volleyball Tournament for new students during Orientation Week.
Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity: a national service and social fraternity. It has been a significant contributor to the Blood and Living Organ Donor Drives, which are coordinated by the Health Advisory Board.
Theta Phi Alpha Sorority : a national service and social sorority. The group participates in fund-raisers and philanthropic work. The sorority strives to provide its members support and close-knit friendships through social and community events.
Asian Student Organization: A support group for Asian students on campus, ASO strives to ensure pride and self-awareness, and it celebrates various holidays and customs.
Association of Black Collegians: ABC promotes multiculturalism and ethnic awareness on campus. It is active each year in the college's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. Members also coordinate Kwanza celebration, a talent and fashion show, as well as dances for the Behrend and Erie communities.
Human Relations Programming Council: HRPC provides learning experiences that integrate communication skills with issues of racism, sexism, prejudice, and discrimination. The council sponsors open fora on topics such as racism, sexism, gay and lesbian issues.
International Student Organization: Promotes cultural awareness through programming for the student body, with foreign students sharing cultural experiences, differences, and background.
Irish American Society: An organization that strives to educate students, faculty, staff, and the community about the culture and history of the Irish people and Ireland.
Jewish Association of Behrend: The purpose of the Jewish Association at Behrend is to establish a Jewish community at Behrend, for students to experience Jewish culture and tradition in a secular environment.
Multi-Cultural Council: The Multi-Cultural Council (MCC) promotes awareness, understanding and appreciation of historically underrepresented groups. It also acts as an advisory organization designed to promote unity and cooperation among its member organizations. MCC also assists in the planning and coordination of intercultural events such as The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, and the Asian/Pacific, Black, and Hispanic History Months, and many other programs.
National Society of Black Engineers: NSBE provides a supportive environment for African-American students through programs and fellowship. NSBE also offers programs such as films and dances for the entire Penn State Erie community.
Organization of African Students: Introduces and promotes the diverse African culture.
Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS): A support group for Latin American students. The group helps coordinate the annual Friday Fiesta dance at Bruno's each year.
Trigon: This organization strives to make homosexuality and bisexuality more acceptable, and it is both a support and social group serving gay, lesbian, and bisexual students, staff, and faculty, and their allies.
Women Today: A support group dedicated to the education, growth, and awareness of students, faculty, and staff concerning the issues of women. Members co-sponsor the Women's Film Series, encourage voter registration, and co-sponsor Take Back the Night.
RECREATION COUNCIL
Cheerleading Club: A co-ed recreational club whose members promote school spirit and whose goal is to encourage students, faculty, and staff to attend Behrend sporting events and to promote spectator participation which is positive in nature.
Chess Club: Provides opportunity for members to advance in the game of chess, through club play and tournaments.
Cycling Club: Promotes cycling while bringing together students and faculty who are interested in cycling.
Equestrian Team: The Penn State Behrend Equestrian Team provides a competitive framework as well as a professional and supportive environment for riders from all backgrounds. The team is a member of a national organization.
Fantasy Gamers: Students practice role-playing games and fantasy or collectable card games.
Hockey Club: Members of the WPCHA Hockey League, the Behrend Hockey club competes against other college Hockey clubs.
KingPins: Bringing together the students of Behrend who enjoy the activity of bowling, discussing the state of bowling today, and what the future may hold for the sport.
Lacrosse Club: Offers Behrend students the opportunity to play recreational Lacrosse. Officially recognized by the National Collegiate Lacrosse League.
Martial Arts Club: Promotes skill development in the art of self-defense. The club has weekly workouts on campus and has as an advisor that is a martial arts instructor.
Outdoors Club: The purpose of this club is to organize outings and various recreational activities such as snow skiing, rock climbing, camping, hiking, canoeing, biking, and any other outdoor interests.
Sailing Club: Organizes events for members and the student body to participate in, and coordinates the use of the sailboat donated to Behrend by the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies. Educates members in the sport of sailing.
Ski and Board Club: To give Behrend students the opportunity to take trips with fellow members and to introduce new skiers and snowboarders to the sport.
Volleyball Club: Offers the students the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate volleyball.
HONOR AND SERVICE COUNCIL ORGANIZATIONS
Alpha Phi Omega (APO): a co-ed national service fraternity based on Scouting principles. APO is open to all students. The group has sponsored such programs as "Giant Twister" during Orientation, and its pie throw in which whipped cream "pies" are tossed at brave Penn State Behrend students, staff, and faculty members. APO's annual Hawaiian Dance raises money for the American Cancer Society.
Beta Beta Beta: Tri-Beta is an honor society recognizing students studying biology who have completed two years of study and have maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade average. Tri-Beta gives students the opportunity to report under graduate research findings through BIOS, the journal of the society.
Lambda Sigma: a national honor society for sophomores who are elected on the basis of outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments. Among other activities, the members of Lambda Sigma sponsor a Care Package program each semester for Penn State Erie students.
Omicron Delta Kappa: a national honor society for junior and senior students and faculty elected into membership on the basis of outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments. The members of ODK are active in serving the community. Its annual Mile of Pennies fund-raiser has benefited the local Second Harvest Food Bank. ODK has adopted the fifth-grade class at Diehl Elementary School in Erie, where students have tutored and participated in Earth Day.
Psi Chi: a national honor society for psychology majors. It sponsors various speakers, field trips, fund-raisers and other campus-wide activities to benefit club members as well as the college and Erie communities.
Reality Check: coordinates service projects that are open to the entire Penn State Erie community, including an annual Alternative Spring Break during which students spend a week helping others in need.
STUDENT LIFE COUNCIL
Auto Club: The Auto Club brings together students who have an interest in automobiles and/or a future in the automotive industry. The Auto Club sponsors a yearly car show.
The Behrend Beacon: Penn State Erie's weekly student newspaper. A variety of staff positions for reporters, copy editors, photographers, and advertising representatives are always available. Letters to the editor on news content, University policy, and editorial issues are welcome.
Behrend Computer Science Organization: Encourages students to discuss novel applications of computer technology in the broadest sense. Speakers and students are invited to give presentations on current hardware and software. Social activities as well as opportunities to participate in conferences are provided.
College Republicans: Dedicated to furthering Republican principles and providing a voice for Republican students, faculty, and staff.
Commuter Council (CC): The primary advocate for off-campus students to the college and the Student Government Association, Commuter Council serves commuting students by conveying their concerns and needs to appropriate offices. Members also volunteer to serve the Erie community through various projects.
Homecoming Committee: Brings together the student body, faculty, staff and alumni through the planning and implementation of Basketball Homecoming Activities.
Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) : IVCF helps students grow in their relationships with Jesus Christ through fellowship, evangelism, discipleship, and missions. The members of IVCF have sponsored "Stump the Chump", a Bruno's Cocoa House featuring Christian bands, and "Ultimate Frisbee".
Joint Residence Council : JRC relates the views of students living in residence halls and apartments to the college administration and sponsors a variety of programs and events. Recent programs have included door-and-window decorating contests for the holidays, a drive-in movie on the Reed lawn during Orientation Week, and a tie-dye party.
Lawrence Hall Council: Provides residents of Lawrence Hall an opportunity to get to know one another and gives the residents a voice in their community.
Lion Ambassadors: Lion Ambassadors help promote Penn State Erie spirit among students, alumni, and friends of the University. Through spirit raising programs, the members share their pride, enthusiasm and commitment to promote the college and University.
Lion Entertainment Board : LEB plans and implements events that serve the cultural, educational, recreational, and social interests of the Penn State Behrend community. The board serves as the primary student programming agency on campus. Weekend events at Bruno's, weekly films, and a cultural series are all coordinated by the board.
Newman Association: A Catholic-based organization that seeks to bring students closer together and to God through learning, prayer, fellowship, and service. Recent events include a Shamrock Shake sale, the building of a playground, clothing drives, and various social activities. The organization also sponsors the weekly Mass on campus, and a fall and spring retreat.
Niagara Hall Council: Gives the residents of Niagara Hall the opportunity to be involved in the Behrend community, starting with Niagara Hall.
Pathfinders: Pathfinders help familiarize students with the Army ROTC program at Behrend through outdoors activities such as repelling and paintball. The club will teach students firearms safety and proper usage. Community service is also a goal of the Pathfinders.
Perry Hall Council: Gives students the opportunity to become more involved with the Behrend Community, and to make their residence hall a better place to live.
Returning Adult Student Organization : RASO promotes the concerns of returning adult students and provides friendship and support for adult students and their families. This organization is devoted to providing fellowship for students who bring adult life experiences to their college role.
Senat Hall Council: Provides a way for Behrend students to become more involved in campus life, and make their residence hall a better place to live.
