Dieting on Campus

When it comes to college life, one thing is true no matter whether you attend Penn State or Podunk University: there are many unhealthy eating temptations that can make dieting seem like a heavy chain that weighs you down. Dieting on campus can be one of, if not the worst places in the world to diet because of the easy access to foods that aren’t especially good for you, the temptation of those ‘bad foods’, and the hectic pace of college life. Sad but true, the proper eating choices are not always the most expedient.

Developing Proper Eating Habits

Students who find themselves dieting on campus often find that the nutritional foundation they received at home was actually woefully inadequate. We live in a society of convenience foods, fast foods, and meals in a box that while filling are not providing the proper foundations of vegetables and protein that need to be included in a proper diet. More alarmingly when it comes to proper eating is that many students choose diets that rob their bodies of proper nutrients rather than those diets in which students fill up on the right foods and use those ‘bad foods’ sparingly.

Combining Fitness with Dieting on Campus

A recent study concluded that when faced with weight loss and health issues most male college students opted for physical fitness and exercise while most female college students relied on dieting or proper eating in order to achieve their goals. Sadly, the most effective approach is a combination of the two rather than one or another. Dieting on campus may not be the first choice for college men but it is much easier on the system than packing away the stacks of pizza and 6-packs then trying to work them off.

Proper Eating for the Single Guy

Men dieting on campus or trying to bulk up their muscle tone a bit often find that they have no real clue where to begin. Most guys on today’s campuses live on pizza and beer then wonder why they always feel as though they are running on fumes. The problem is a serious lack of proper eating and nutrition in order to fuel those muscles that the workouts tend to put on. The body will eventually attack those muscles seeking the nutrition it needs in order to function. In other words by not learning to eat properly men often do more harm than good when approaching a fitness and health plan.

Dieting on Campus: Resisting Temptation

One of the biggest problems that college women face when dieting on campus is the temptation to cheat on their diets. It’s a healthy temptation and perfectly allowable when done in moderation. The problem is that women don’t really tend to do much of anything in moderation. Women shop to excess, diet to excess (in many cases), and eat chocolate to excess. The problem is that on almost any college campus in the country, chocolate is available almost everywhere. A valuable lesson when it comes to eating properly is to learn that allowing yourself a little taste of the things you enjoy will help resist the urge to binge on those things ruining the efforts and deprivation you have experienced to get to this point.

The Basics of Proper Eating

The best possible advice that can be given to those who are dieting is that you should always go back to the old standards when trying to discover and develop proper eating habits. The food pyramid is an excellent place to start. If you follow the food pyramid diligently you should find that not only do you not have the room left to fill up on foods that aren’t good for you, but that you do not have the desire to do so either.

You do not need to feel deprived or hungry all the time in order to lose the weight that is plaguing you. Combine sensible eating according to the food pyramid with a light (or rigorous) balance of exercise and you should find those pounds melting away before you know it.
