Avoiding Acid Reflux
Penn State students will experience many things during their tenure on campus. One thing that is becoming far more common is the occasional struggle with acid reflux that seems to plague college students across the nation. Acid reflux or chronic heartburn can be caused by many factors. Unfortunately, most of those factors are quite plentiful on your average college campus. The good news is that relief is quite often available in many forms. The bad news is that there is not yet a one size fits all type of relief that works for all who suffer from the symptoms of chronic heartburn.
Common Causes of Chronic Heartburn
Believe it or not, stress is one of the number one causes of chronic heartburn. While some may believe there is no stress on the college campus it is quite likely that millions of college students around the world will disagree with that rather quickly. Stress is in quick supply on most college campuses as driven students strive to achieve and those who aren’t so driven strive to get by. There is also the stress of popularity, finding a meaning in life, and deciding once and for all what direction life should really take. Of course, this is only a small part of the problem when it comes to acid reflux.
What is Acid Reflux?
In laymen’s terms, acid reflux is a condition in which the acids in the stomach literally boil up into the esophagus causing more than a little bit of discomfort. There are plenty of over the counter remedies for the chronic heartburn symptoms of this malady and many of them are quite affordable to the average Penn State student. Once again however, it is important to keep in mind that not all remedies will work for all sufferers. Acid reflux for many is a lifelong ailment though with proper treatments and a few lifestyle adjustments the chronic heartburn symptoms can often be managed and kept from interfering with daily life without the assistance of medications. The key is in consistently making the necessary changes rather than making them sporadically.
What Lifestyle Changes can Alleviate Chronic Heartburn Symptoms?
There are many simple lifestyle adjustments that can reduce the painful occurrences of acid reflux symptoms. Among these changes are the following: exercise daily, eat smaller meals more frequently, stop smoking, find a stress relieving hobby such as yoga or model building, cut back on alcohol consumption, elevate your head while sleeping, and avoid foods that trigger attacks (these would typically be deep fat fried, spicy, and exotic foods though sometimes the sources of chronic heartburn attacks are surprising). While it isn’t necessary to make all the lifestyle changes at one time, slowly incorporating these new changes into your routine should significantly reduce your suffering from these attacks.
Is there a Cure for Acid Reflux?
There is no cure for acid reflux at this time. Part of the reason for the lack of a universal cure is the fact that there are so many different contributing factors. There are however many very effective treatments that can remove the symptoms of chronic heartburn from your daily routine. For those who have tried lifestyle changes and over the counter remedies to little effect, perhaps it is time to consult a physician and see what relief can be found through prescription methods or a combination of different types of treatment.
Living with Chronic Heartburn
While there is no cure for acid reflux there is no reason to needlessly suffer from the symptoms when relief can be found. There is a little effort involved in discovering the specific underlying causes of acid reflux or chronic heartburn in some patients but once the discovery has been made, treatments can be prescribed that often bring about almost immediate relief. Whether a Penn State student or one of the professors, relief is available for the symptoms of chronic heartburn and the results of finding this relief is a much greater quality of life. It may be necessary to live with the illness but it is definitely not necessary to live with the symptoms.
