Who is Alpha Sigma Tau? È
Alpha Sigma Tau is a national sorority established in 1899 at Ypsilanti, Michigan.  What began with eight founding women has grown to include women of all ages throughout the United States as either active members or alumnae.  Alpha Sigma Tau's mission:  "to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of its members..." Through this common goal we have developed a close sisterhood composed of many unique women proud to wear our letters and represent AST.

What kinds of girls can join our sisterhood? È
Active; Self-Reliant; Trustworthy.  This our motto, and we welcome all girls who exemplify it.  No mold exists that an AST must fit perfectly into.  We are diverse, and from our diversity we grow stronger in many ways.  Any girl who feels she can show devotion to Alpha Sigma Tau and to the sisters is more than welcome to join!  We love to meet new people, and even if you feel you aren't a perfect fit with us, you will have made a new group of friends regardless.

What does AST do at Behrend and in the surrounding community? È
Our sorority is very active here on campus.  We participate in most all Behrend and/or Greek sponsored events.  Sisters take part in Panhellenic, SGA, Lion Ambassadors, Pennsylvania Educational Partnership Program, Psy Chi, Order of Omega, and Varsity Golf just to name a few!  One event very special to us is the Mr./Miss Penn State Behrend Pageant.  This pageant has become a new yearly tradition at Behrend, becoming bigger and more elaborate each year it is held.  This year we marched together for Take Back the Night and SafeNet.  AST also does a highway cleanup every semester, as well as participating in Habitat for Humanity, THON, Shriner's Teddy Bear Drive, and Operation Paperback.

How many sisters are there? È
Currently, we have 14 active sisters.  We are proud to have continued to increase our numbers in the last year!  Last fall, 1 of our sisters became alumnae.  This year we hope to continue to grow strong.  With us, every member counts, and it's not the numbers that matter, but what we are accomplishing with the quality girls we have.  Our smaller size has allowed us to become extremely close.  We are truly sisters in every meaning of the word!

Don't sororities haze? È
You've heard the horror stories, and yes, some of them are probably true.  Those stories, however, were in the past, and today, Alpha Sigma Tau does not condone hazing to any degree.  Members do not participate in any activity that constitutes as hazing, nor do we encourage it at any time.  Think about it, if you're a potential new member, the last thing we want to do is cause you any sort of harm!

Are the rumors about sororities true? È
Without a doubt, when you arrive at Behrend, you will hear rumors about the various sororities.  Stereotypes exist, as with any organization, and it is much easier for people to talk about those individuals that are prominent on campus.  Each member represents the whole, but it is never accurate to attribute individual characteristics to everyone associated with that person.  Before you make any assumptions or form an opinion, get to know us.  Don't let someone else make up your mind for you.  We may not be who you had thought or heard we were.

How will AST benefit me? È
Alpha Sigma Tau offers numerous things to each of its members.  In it you acquire friends for life and the feeling of belonging to something much bigger than yourself.  The experiences you share and the memories you make are priceless.  A new dimension is added to your character-- you are not only yourself, but you are an AST, and an AST you will be for life.
