II.  Human Rights in the News

A.  Juarez Resolution passed

The House International Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere has unanimously approved a resolution that addresses the violent murders of women in border cities of Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. The resolution denounces the murders and asks that the United States government engage the Mexican government in order to solve the open cases and work to prevent any more deaths. Most of the murders have gone unsolved, and human rights groups have faulted the local government for mishandling the investigations.

-You may or may not know about Amnesty's ambitious goal of 15,000 new student/youth members over the next year.  That means 3,000 new members in our region.  So we need a plan to do two things: the first is to get all student activists to become dues-paying members, and second is to get more students involved in AI as members of groups as well as dues-paying members.

          Who?

50 student activists from across the region, anyone who will                          still be a student next year

          What?

The main purpose is to develop a concrete strategy to bring in              3,000 new student/youth members, and participants will be                   responsible for following up on that plan after the           camp.                   This camp is the beginning of a year-long commitment to a recruitment plan that participants will develop.

II.               Human Rights News

1.                  Amnesty International is happy to report that Rebiya Kadeer was released from prison on March 17.  Rebiya Kadeer is a successful businesswoman who was jailed for her efforts to publicize discrimination and human rights violations against China's Uighur minority and was also one of China’s most prominent advocates of women’s rights. All these activities came to an abrupt halt in August 1999 when police arrested her.

Rebiya Kadeer has spent more than five years jailed in a region where prison conditions are notoriously harsh. Prisoners in China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region receive poor food, inadequate sanitation, and little medical treatment. Amnesty International has expressed grave concern about reports of Rebiya Kadeer’s deteriorating health.
