What exactly is the Science Club?
Science Club was devised to keep students who are interested in science up-to-date with new research and discoveries, and to encourage professional development. To do this, we have arranged to have faculty and guest speakers tell us a bit about their career and research. We are also working to get individuals who are interested in science to learn about topics within their field through field trips and participating in outreach programs.
So is this club just for Science majors?
Definitely not! We are looking for people in any major who just share an appreciation for science, and want to learn more about it. Right now the club is comprised primarily of engineers.
What's in it for me?
While in the science club, you will be subject to the most recent studies and findings. You will have also gained knowledge into various areas of science/engineering via lectures, field trips, and outreach programs. Science Club also allows you to campaign for an officer position, thus adding another valuable leadership position for use in resumes/vitaes. Science Club lectures are also typically accompanied by light refreshments--usually pizza and soda. The club also distributes low-priced t-shirts as a members-only bonus. The science club also takes field trips to science-related destinations--last year was the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC!
So you're saying I have to attend lectures all the time, just like I do while in the classroom?!
All science club members are encouraged to attend the lectures, although they are not mandatory. If interest fails you or work piles up, you will not be penalized for missing a lecture. Lectures also occur about monthly (view the Archive if you fail to believe me)--hardly "all the time". Lectures differ from the classroom as there has never been a quiz of any type following any science club event and have no bearing on your academic standing whatsoever.
This sounds good, but what's the catch? What do you ask of me?
The science club is primarily a development organization. We do not collect dues. All we require is participation as often as possible and courteousness always. An appreciation of science and those who enjoy it is mandatory.
The club doesn't collect dues, really?
Really, the club is primarily funded by Penn State.
I'm sold, how do I join?
To join, simply use the Contact button at left and choose the join options. Within a few days, you should get a welcome e-mail in reply with the most recent meeting information. Walk-ins are always welcome at all science club events, if you like what you've seen, please ask an officer to have your name added to the membership roster so we can keep you up-to-date on all the science club happenings.
